This novel addresses the lives and times of six generations of a Jewish family, immigrants from the Berlin area, in their efforts to come to terms with Dutch society in Amsterdam and The Hague. 

Covering a full three centuries, from the Thirty Years War up to the Second World War (1645-1945), the novel tells a captivating tale of the intertwining strife for the high ideals of toleration and integration with all too human family feuds and personal ambitions.
